How to plant

• Choose well-drained sandy loam in full sun. Watermelon does not like waterlogged soil.
• Sow 2-3 seeds per hole, 2-3 cm deep. Thin to 1-2 strong plants.
• Space holes about 1 m apart in rows about 2 m apart, to give vines room to spread.
• Plant early in the rains, or in the dry season with irrigation for fruits that mature in dry weather.

Care after planting

• Water regularly until fruits are full size, then reduce water to improve sweetness.
• Apply NPK at about 2 weeks and again at flowering.
• Keep weeds down until the vines cover the ground.
