Giant Hybrid cocoa seedlings are nursery-raised hybrid cocoa plants for establishing a new cocoa farm or filling gaps in an old one. Hybrid cocoa is chosen for vigour and earlier bearing than old local trees. Cocoa grows best in the humid forest belt of southern Nigeria, such as Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Cross River and Edo. Young plants need shade, steady moisture and good weed control in the first two years. It suits new and existing cocoa farmers.

- Watch for black pod and capsids once the trees start bearing and act early.
Delivery of live plants
Seedlings travel in nursery bags with their soil. When they arrive, keep them in light shade and water them. Plant them out within a few days so the roots do not dry or coil in the bag.
Frequently asked questions
How many cocoa seedlings do I need per hectare?
At 3 m by 3 m spacing you need about 1,100 seedlings per hectare, or about 450 per acre. Add a few extra for gap-filling.
When will Giant Hybrid cocoa start producing?
With good shade, weeding and feeding, early-bearing hybrids usually start podding about 18-24 months after transplanting. Full production comes a few years later.
Do hybrid cocoa seedlings need shade?
Yes. Young cocoa burns in full sun. Provide temporary shade such as plantain in the first two to three years.
Can I grow cocoa in the north?
Cocoa needs high rainfall and humidity. It is best in the southern forest belt; the dry north is not suitable without special care.
