This is a hybrid strawberry seedling (Fragaria), ready for a pot, grow bag or raised bed. Strawberries give sweet, red berries rich in vitamin C. They prefer cool nights, so they grow best on the Jos Plateau, Mambilla and other high areas. In hotter lowland areas, grow them in pots with afternoon shade and steady water. A good plant for home gardeners and hobby growers.

How to plant
- Use loose, rich, well-drained soil mixed with compost. Raised beds or pots stop roots from rotting.
- Set the crown (where leaves meet roots) level with the soil surface. Buried crowns rot.
- Space plants about 30 cm apart.
- Plant at the start of the rains, or any time in pots you can water.
Care after planting
- Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Mulch with dry grass or straw to keep berries off the soil.
- Feed with a balanced fertilizer or compost every 3-4 weeks once flowering starts.
- Pinch off runners if you want bigger fruits, or root them to make new plants.
Delivery of live plants
Live plants travel in nursery bags. When they arrive, keep them in light shade and water them the same day. Plant them out within a few days so the roots do not get crowded in the bag.
Frequently asked questions
Can strawberries grow in Lagos or Ibadan?
They can, but heat limits fruiting. Grow them in pots, give afternoon shade and water steadily. Cool highland areas like Jos give much better crops.
When will my strawberry seedling start fruiting?
With good care, plants usually flower and fruit within a few months of planting, once they are well established.
How long does a strawberry plant keep producing?
Plants produce best in their first two or three years. Replace older plants with new ones from runners.
Can I grow strawberries in a container?
Yes. A pot at least 20-25 cm wide with drainage holes works well for one plant.
