Single super phosphate (SSP) is a granular phosphate fertilizer made by treating rock phosphate with sulphuric acid, which turns the phosphorus into a form plants can take up. Besides phosphate, SSP also supplies sulphur and calcium. This TAK SSP is rated 20% phosphate (P2O5) and comes in a 50kg bag. Nigerian farmers use it at planting for legumes (soybean, groundnut, cowpea), vegetables, yam and fruit trees, to build strong roots and better flowering, pod fill and fruit set.

How much SSP per hectare
The right rate depends on your soil. A soil test or your extension officer gives the best figure. The table shows phosphate rates commonly recommended for Nigerian farms and how many 50kg bags of 20% SSP supply them.

How to apply SSP
- Apply at planting or just before, when the soil is moist.
- Place SSP in the planting hole or in a band 5 cm beside and below the seed row. Phosphorus hardly moves in soil, so put it where the roots will grow.
- Cover with soil. Do not leave granules on the surface or touching seeds directly in large amounts.
- For vegetables and fruit trees, a second small dose can be worked into the soil at flowering.
- Add nitrogen and potassium separately: SSP has none. Legumes need little nitrogen; maize and vegetables need urea or an NPK.

What is single super phosphate used for?
SSP supplies phosphorus, sulphur and calcium. Farmers use it at planting to build roots and improve flowering, pod fill and fruiting, especially in soybean, groundnut, cowpea, vegetables and fruit trees.
How many bags of SSP do I need for one hectare of soybean?
Commonly about 150–200kg, which is 3–4 bags of 50kg. A soil test can lower or raise this.
Is SSP the same as TSP?
No. SSP has about 16–20% phosphate plus sulphur and calcium. TSP has about 46% phosphate but little sulphur, so you need less of it for the same phosphate.
Can I use SSP instead of NPK?
Not on its own. SSP has no nitrogen or potassium. Use it with urea, NPK or potash where your crop needs them.
When is the best time to apply SSP?
At planting, placed near the seed row and covered with soil. Phosphorus applied late, on the surface, is used poorly.
Does SSP make soil acidic?
Only slightly. On already acidic soils, apply lime if a soil test shows it is needed.
