FARO 44, also known as SIPI, is one of the most widely grown improved rice varieties in Nigeria. It is a long-grain lowland rice with good milling quality and a lower tendency for grains to break during processing. It matures earlier than many local types, has medium height that helps it stand against wind, and tolerates blast disease. FARO 44 can be grown in rain-fed lowlands and, with irrigation, more than once a year. Sold per kg.

How to plant
- Soak seed for about 24 hours, then drain and keep moist under a cover for another 24-48 hours to pre-sprout.
- Raise a nursery and transplant at about 21 days, 2 to 3 seedlings per hill at 20 x 20 cm. Or drill/broadcast directly into a well-levelled field.
- A common seed rate is about 40-60 kg per hectare; transplanting uses less seed than broadcasting.
- Plant with the onset of the rains, or any time on irrigated land.
Care after planting
- Keep the field level and manage water so plants are not left dry at tillering and flowering.
- Weed early; weeds cut rice yields fast.
- Apply NPK at planting or early tillering and top-dress with urea at tillering and panicle start, following local advice.
- Harvest when most grains turn golden, then dry well before storage or milling.
