Hybrid Cameroonian Giant Plantain Sucker

The Hybrid Cameroonian Giant is an improved plantain known for big bunches with many hands and heavy fingers. These healthy suckers grow vigorous plants with strong stems that cope better with wind. The first bunch is usually ready about 8–12 months after planting. They suit commercial plantain farms, chips and flour processors, cooperatives and backyard growers in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Delta and other humid areas.

How to plant

• Clear, plough and harrow the land. Make sure it drains well.
• Dig holes about 30 cm deep (wider for big suckers) and add manure.
• Space plants 3 m x 3 m for good air flow (about 1,100 per hectare).
• Set the sucker upright, cover the corm, firm the soil and water.
• Plant early in the rains so plants are established before the dry season.

Care after planting

• Apply manure or NPK fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the rains.
• Weed often and mulch to keep moisture in.
• Keep one mother plant and one follower per stand; remove other suckers.
• Prop heavy bunches with poles to stop plants falling.
• Remove leaves with black streaks to slow Black Sigatoka.

Delivery of live plants

Live plants travel in nursery bags or as fresh planting material. Open the package as soon as it arrives, keep it in shade and water lightly. Plant within a few days so the roots do not dry out.
