How to plant
Onion is best raised in a nursery bed and transplanted.
- Choose a sunny site with loose, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged spots.
- Dig the bed about 20-25 cm deep, break clods and rake it smooth.
- Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills, about 0.5 cm deep, and cover lightly.
- Transplant when seedlings are pencil-thick (usually 5-6 weeks). Space plants about 10 cm apart in rows 20-30 cm apart.
- Do not plant deeper than about 2.5 cm; deep planting gives poor bulbs.
Care after planting
- Water slowly and deeply; onions have shallow roots and need steady moisture while bulbs swell.
- Weed by hand while weeds are small. Hoeing too deep cuts onion roots.
- Mix a balanced fertilizer (for example NPK 15-15-15) into the bed before planting, then top-dress when plants have 5-6 leaves.
- Stop watering when the tops start to fall over, then lift and dry the bulbs in shade.
