Urea fertilizer is the most concentrated common nitrogen fertilizer, with 46% nitrogen (46-0-0). One 50kg bag supplies 23kg of nitrogen, the nutrient that makes crops green, leafy and high-yielding. In Nigeria, urea is used mainly as a top-dressing on maize, rice, sorghum, millet and vegetables, after a basal NPK at planting. How much urea per hectare
Rates depend on your soil, crop and how much NPK you used at planting. As a common guide for maize after a basal NPK, many Nigerian farmers top-dress with about 2–3 bags (100–150kg) of urea per hectare, roughly 1 bag per acre. Rice often takes a similar total, split between tillering and panicle initiation. A soil test or your extension officer gives the most accurate rate.
How to apply urea without wasting it
- Apply when the soil is moist, ideally just before light rain or after a rain.
- Place urea in a ring or band 5–10 cm from the plant stem.
- Cover it with soil. Urea left on hot, dry ground loses nitrogen to the air.
- Keep it off wet leaves, and never place it against the stem: it can scorch plants.
- In flooded rice, apply onto drained or shallow water and let the water back in after a few days, as advised locally.
Urea vs NPK: which do you need?
NPK (for example NPK 15-15-15 or NPK 20-10-10) feeds nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium at planting. Urea adds extra nitrogen later, when the crop grows fastest. Most cereal farmers use both: NPK first, urea as top-dressing. For legumes, use phosphate such as single super phosphate (SSP) instead of much urea.

When should I apply urea to maize?

How many bags of urea for one hectare of maize?
Commonly 2–3 bags of 50kg per hectare as top-dressing after NPK. Your soil test may change this.
Can I mix urea with NPK?
Yes, just before applying. Do not store mixed fertilizer for long, as it can absorb moisture and cake.
Why is my urea not working?
Usually it was left on dry soil surface and the nitrogen escaped into the air, or heavy rain washed it away. Cover it with soil and apply on moist soil.
Is 46% urea better than NPK 20-10-10?
They do different jobs. Urea gives more nitrogen per bag but no phosphorus or potassium. Use NPK at planting and urea later.
