Why Farm Inputs Before Planting Matter
Before a seed touches the soil, your farm must be properly prepared. Using the right inputs:
- Improves germination rates
- Reduces pest and disease pressure
- Saves water and fertilizer
- Increases yield and profit
Many farmers ask:
What farm inputs should I buy before planting?
Let’s break it down clearly.
Complete List of Farm Inputs for Planting
Below is a complete farm input checklist every farmer should consider before planting.
1. Quality Seeds (Certified & Crop-Specific)
Seeds are the foundation of your farm.
Examples:
- Maize seeds (hybrid or open-pollinated)
- Tomato, pepper, cucumber, and vegetable seeds
- Drought-tolerant varieties for dry season farming
👉 Using fake or low-quality seeds leads to poor germination and losses.
2. Soil Preparation Inputs
Before planting, your soil needs proper conditioning.
Key inputs include:
- Organic manure or compost
- Soil conditioners
- Lime (for acidic soils)
These inputs improve nutrient availability and root development.
3. Fertilizers (Basal & Growth Stage)
Fertilizer choice depends on your crop and soil type.
Common fertilizers used before planting:
- NPK (15-15-15, 20-10-10, etc.)
- Urea
- SSP (Single Super Phosphate)
- Micronutrients
This is especially important for best farm inputs for maize planting and vegetables.
4. Herbicides (Weed Control Before Planting)
Weeds compete with crops for nutrients and water.
Examples:
- Pre-emergence herbicides
- Non-selective herbicides for land clearing
Using herbicides before planting reduces labor and improves crop establishment.
5. Pest & Disease Control Chemicals
Even before planting, pests and diseases can affect seeds and soil.
Recommended inputs:
- Seed treatment chemicals
- Fungicides
- Insecticides
- Bio-pesticides
This is critical for vegetable farming inputs before planting.
Inputs Required for Dry Season Farming
Dry season farming requires extra preparation due to limited water.
Must-have dry season inputs:
- Drip irrigation kits or sprinklers
- Water pumps
- Mulching materials
- Drought-tolerant seeds
- Foliar fertilizers
Dry season farming is profitable—but only with the right inputs.
Best Farm Inputs for Maize Planting
Maize is one of the most planted crops in Nigeria.
Maize input checklist:
- Hybrid maize seeds
- NPK fertilizer
- Pre-emergence herbicide
- Post-emergence herbicide
- Insecticide for stem borers
👉 These inputs significantly improve yield and profitability.
Inputs Needed Before Planting Tomatoes
Tomato farming is input-intensive but highly profitable.
Tomato farming inputs before planting:
- Improved tomato seeds
- Seed treatment fungicides
- Organic manure
- NPK and calcium fertilizers
- Insecticides and fungicides
- Mulch or drip irrigation (for dry season)
